Collingwood kicked the first two goals of the game, but only two more before three quarter time as Melbourne built up a match-winning lead in their first practice match of the new season.

A late goal by the Pies in the second term was cancelled out immediately by a Tim Smith goal off the ground at the start of the third and the Demons went away to a comfortable victory without a number of their stars.

Best were Gawn, Preuss and Harmes.
