After a much improved 1893 season, the Reds opened the year with a win but suffered defeat in three of their next four matches. They would only lose twice more for the rest of the season on their way to a second place finish, to eventual Premiers Essendon and third placed South Melbourne.
For the first time all senior VFA clubs were restricted to playing the same amount of games against each other.
Melbourne's chances at the premiership were ruined in the first month of the season when their team full of rookies lost three of the first four. With Essendon on their way to a fourth premiership in a row it was impossible to catch them despite an eight match winning streak.
In a season review in The Argus, David Christy was named amongst the best players in the competition and O'Halloran as the league's best defender.
