Essendon win by 2 goals

Goalkickers McCarthy 2, Roche 1

After two wins in a row to restart their stuttering season, Melbourne nearly sprung a big upset against the best team in the competition, but again kicked themselves out of contention.

Essendon provided Melbourne a chance by entering the game without a number of their best players. They conceded two quick goals, but proved too strong in the end.

On slippery turf the Reds, better at picking the ball up off the ground, had the best of the game for the first three quarters. They played the conditions better and had a two goal lead at quarter time. Their ruckmen and defence were both strong, but up front they missed chances in both quarters during the second half and it left the door open for an Essendon comeback.

Roche had a chance to seal the game with five minutes to play in the last quarter, but he missed and Essendon immediately switched to catching and passing his side.

Best were Fry, Christy and O'Dea.
