Carlton were seemingly on their way to a huge win early when their midfielders fed on the dominance of the best on ground Percy Jones. By time-on of the second quarter they had extended their margin to 53 points and a massacre was on the cards.

It was then that the Demons finally switched on, kicking 6 goals in 5 minutes of time-on before the main break and continued their good work in the second half. Twice in the 3rd quarter the margin had been trimmed to nine points, and a Henry Coles goal early in the last brought the margin back under double digits again.

The Demons then ran out of gas. Peter Johnston kicked three goals on debut but it wasn't enough and the Blues ran away with the match.

Melbourne's best were Brewer, Wells and Fitzsimmons.

The Demons badly missed Stan Alves (knee) and Stephen Smith who were late withdrawals, replaced by Wilkins and Giampaolo respectively, as well as Robert Flower and Gary Hardeman who were on Victorian state duty. Wilkins and Goss were replaced by Carroll and Giampaolo in the last quarter.
