Graduated from the Under 19s in 1973 as a speedy rover, before putting on weight and becoming big enough to also play as a ruck/rover or defender. After a career best nine games in 1974, he only played with the seniors once in 1975. That year he won the Reserves Gardiner Medal, polling 18 votes to win by three. He also won Melbourne's Reserves Best and Fairest)).

Dropped to the Supplementary List in 1976, Chamberlain played four more games before leaving the club. He played 71 games for VFA side Camberwell between 1978 and 1981.
