Cleared for free by Footscray after 20 games between 1973 and 1974, Wilkins added just 14 more in a season and a half before being cleared to Sandringham midway through 1976. He captained the side in 1977 and 1978, playing in a Grand Final and finishing runner-up in the league's best and fairest award in his first year. Wilkins was linked with moves to clubs around Australia in early 1979 and signed to captain/coach South Bendigo, but didn't pay the $10,000 transfer fee demanded by the Zebras.

Wilkins represented the VFA in 1977 and 1981, in the season he returned to the league after missing the 1980 season when work took him to Darwin. He played 103 games with the club until the end of 1983 before joining Leeton. He was later selected on the wing in the Sandringham team of the century.
