First appeared as a Reserves player in 1975 before making his senior debut the next year. Lightly used in his first two seasons, Wingate's career peaked with 13 games in 1978. He played 10 more in 1979 but began to fall out of favour in 1980, and while he remained on the list in 1981 he failed to play another game.

He joined Nathalia in 1985, and to Kyabram as an assistant coach in 1986 before moving to Canberra League club Ainslie in 1987. That year he was chosen to play for the ACTFL against the VFA but had to withdraw due to injury. His side won the premiership that year, and in 1989 he was promoted to assistant coach.

In 1990 he was again selected to play for the league against the VFA and as Ainslie won another premiership Wingate was their best and fairest player.

In December 1991 Wingate was appointed non-playing coach of Belconnen and remained to the end of 1993.
