Fresh off a Best and Fairest award at Port Melbourne, where he had played since 1973, Goss announced that he wanted to join the Demons in 1976. South Melbourne held his rights and refused to negotiate, but he was eventually cleared before Round 2, 1976. He was named in the side immediately as an attempt to boost the rover stocks.

After four games in the first half of the season he returned to Port for 1977 and played 128 games for them until 1981, including the 1980 premiership.

His brother Norm played 202 games for South Melbourne and Hawthorn. Second brother Kevin played 24 games for South.
