Geelong has recently returned to the league after an absence caused by wartime travel restrictions, and they provided a welcome victim for the Demons to register their first win of the new season.

On their return Geelong had a young team, and nobody could handle Fred Fanning who plundered the Pivotonians for 11 goals. The match was as good as over at quarter time and Melbourne extended the margin at the end of every quarter.
