Rover who began his career at Geelong and played three seasons. He missed 1942, before joining South Melbourne for a season in 1943 while Geelong were in recess due to the war. He left South after a disagreement with the coach, but was expected to return in 1944 before choosing to play for Melbourne.
As Geelong players were only on 'loan' while they were out of the league, Melbourne had to arrange a clearance with his original side. He was swapped to Melbourne for a Seconds player that was now living in Geelong.
In his first year he kicked 17 goals in the first six rounds of the season, but played just one more match, and two more in 1945 before crossing to Port Melbourne in June of that year.
