Brother of Herb Matthews, and uncle of Herbie. Played in one game, a draw, in 1935 but even though he impressed he missed the next game because of commitments at Fairfield then couldn't force his way back in.
Remained on the senior list into the 1937 pre-season but didn't play senior football again until he lined up for South Melbourne in 1938. Matthews left South in 1941 and joined VFA side Preston, before rejoining Melbourne in 1942. He played 14 more games before a fractured ankle during 1944 finished his VFL career. He reappeared with Port Melbourne in 1946.
