Considered one of the recruits of the year when he debuted for Footscray in 1970, Pagnoccollo failed to continue his good form and at the end of 1973 was swapped to the Demons along with Garry Baker and John Keast for Greg Parke. He had originally been linked with a move to Werribee.

The rover played just one game off the interchange before moving to the VFA where he played with 36 games with Oakleigh. During 1975 he was temporarily loaned to McKinnon, before returning to Oakleigh.

In 1980 he was offered a position as assistant coach at Sorrento in the Mornington Peninsula league but the club refused him a clearance. He remained with Oakleigh, then quit at the end of the year to join Mordialloc from 1981 to 1983. He left to pursue a professional running career in 1984.
