After a narrow win over Carlton the previous week, Melbourne extended their winning streak to two thanks to a welcome return to form by spearhead Darren Bennett. Bennett had only managed one goal in 11 quarters before the match but kicked five straight, took 11 marks and also played at centre half-forward.
Kicking with a strong breeze Melbourne were slow to start, taking 20 minutes to get their first goal of the day then adding another three before the end of the quarter.
The Demons running game out of the backline cut up the Dogs, and with Footscray unable to convert their chances or score more than one goal with the wind in the second term it was left for Melbourne to open up a match winning lead by the last quarter. They slackened off in the final term but the match was well and truly won already.
Best were Johnson, Stynes and Bennett.
