Heaver burst onto the AFL scene with five goals on debut, but struggled for goals after that. He struggled to break into a strong forward line in 1991, playing three games before being delisted the day before that year's National Draft. He went back to Epping for 1992, then joined Carlton as a supplementary list Reserves player. The Blues added him to their senior list in the Mid-Season draft. Heaver spent five years with the Blues, kicking a career-high 48 goals in 1993 and playing in their losing Grand Final. He also played a string of games in 1995, but lost his spot before the Blues won the flag.

In 1997, Heaver joined Port Adelaide and played there for two seasons before retiring. He played in premierships for Ainslie and Northcote Park, before coaching Greensborough in 2001 and 2002.
