Former Carlton champion who joined the club as a midfield coach in 2004. Spent one season with the Demons before moving into senior coaching with Norwood in the Eastern District League second division.

Ratten returned to the Blues as an assistant in (2007)) and was made caretaker coach when Denis Pagan resigned. At the end of the season he was given the senior coaching role permanently and led Carlton into the finals in 2009.

Ratten was sacked by Carlton late in the 2012 season, and despite speculation linking him to the Port Adelaide senior job he eventually joined Gold Coast as an assistant coach.
