After 20 straight losses at Docklands dating back to 2007, the Demons played a side above them on percentage six days after a creditable performance against Collingwood on Queen's Birthday Monday.
Jesse Hogan kicked two first quarter goals on route to becoming the first Demon to boot five in a game since Sam Blease in Round 20, 2012 but St Kilda managed to take a one point lead into quarter time.
The Saints booted away in the second quarter before Melbourne stormed home and kicked three late goals to reduce the gap to a single goal. The sides remained close for the rest of the game, with the Demons opening up a two goal lead before late goals from St Kilda dragged the margin back to a point and then a missed set shot after the siren tied the scores.
Neither side kicked a goal for the first 25 minutes of the last quarter, and with just a minute to go Jeremy Howe goalled from a difficult set shot to put his side in front. With Melbourne players unaware that in a short quarter there was only 40 seconds left they failed to throw any further numbers back into defence and when St Kilda won the centre clearance they went forward only for a lucky bounce to land in the hands of Leigh Montagna who goalled from the square with 19 seconds left to win the game for his side.
Best were Vince, Watts and Jones. Viv Michie replaced Cameron Pedersen at half time after Pedersen suffered a broken wrist.
