Recruited from the Bendigo League, Hurst played on a half-back flank in the 1972 Carlton premiership team. He was cleared to Melbourne for 1975, where he played three seasons. After failing to kick a goal in 53 games with the Blues, Hurst goalled on debut with the Demons. After impressing during his first year, both as a defender and ruck/rover, Hurst only played three games over the next two seasons before joining VFA side Coburg in mid-1977.
At the start of 1978, Melbourne asked for a $7000 transfer fee, after he had already played 10 games, but the Lions countered by saying the agreement was that they would pay Melbourne $100 for every game Hurst played in 1977. The dispute carried on for over a month, with Melbourne then demanding $2000 but Coburg refusing to pay. The teams finally settled, allowing him to play out the year in the VFA. He applied for a clearance to North Albury in 1979 but after it was initially refused he was allowed to go on appeal to the VFA.
