The powerful ruckman/defender served in the Navy in World War II before joining Old Melburnians. Recruited to Melbourne in 1949, he continued to play as an amateur in the VFL. Woods was also known as the one of the best amateur heavyweight boxers in the country in the early 1950s, and also represented Victoria at Rugby Union

Woods retired before the 1953 season, but returned for seven games that year before moving to England in July. He returned to Australia in 1954, appeared in some Seconds games, then played six seasons with Rugby side Harlequins.

In 1999, Woods was named in the Melbourne Grammar Team of the Century.
