Wingman/ruck-rover who debuted for North Hobart in 1990, and played in a premiership the next year. After impressing John Northey with his performance in that Grand Final, Melbourne drafted Kilmartin with the pick they'd received from Footscray for Tony Campbell. Kilmartin was named in the extended squad for Round 22, 1992 but didn't make the final side and was delisted without playing a game in the 1993 pre-season, but remained as a Reserves player that year.

Joined WAFL side East Fremantle in 1995, and after finishing second in the 1997 Sandover Medal, he got a second chance at an AFL career with Hawthorn, who took him with selection #12 in the pre-season draft. He played 10 games for the Hawks in 1998 but was delisted at the end of the year.
