Career statistics

The second overall selection in the 2010 National Draft, Bennell won the Larke Medal for best player in the Under 18 championships in his draft year. He played in Gold Coast's inaugural side, but was restricted to 14 games in his first season after being dropped multiple times. The next year he played every game and finished runner up in the club's best and fairest. In 2013 photos emerged of him taking drugs, and after a street altercation in 2015 he was traded to Fremantle.

Persistent calf injuries restricted Bennell to two games with the Dockers in four seasons, after which he was delisted. Invited to train with several clubs, he chose to trial at Melbourne and won a spot on the list for 2020. After the enforced league break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bennell debuted in Melbourne's first game back, playing for the same side as cousin Jamie Bennell.

After being left out of the side for the last two months of the season, Bennell was delisted after breaching COVID-19 protocols in the team's Queensland hub, he had been given a four game suspension for the breach.
