The mature-aged recruit was added to Melbourne's rookie list after winning two best and fairest awards in the NEAFL where he averaged 32 possessions a game. After an impressive pre-season campaign vandenBerg debuted in the first game of the season, and other than two periods where he was forced out with injury he remained a fixture in the team's midfield throughout the season.
In 2016 he was used more as a forward than a midfielder and kicked 12 goals, but his 2017 campaign was destroyed by a heel injury suffered in pre-season and he didn't play a game. Missed the start of 2018, only returning to the VFL midway through the year. Quickly broke back into the senior squad, playing the last seven games of the season including three finals.
vandenBerg flirted with a move to Sydney during the 2018 trade period to be closer to his family after the death of his father, before recommitting to the Demons until the end of 2021. He injured his foot before Round 1, 2019 and missed the whole year. He returned for 12 games in 2020, but struggled to find a spot in a strong side in 2021. He played just four games, twice as unused medical substitute, before being delisted at the end of the season.
Played for Old Xaverians in 2022.
