Signed as a Northern Territory priority selection by Gold Coast for their first season in the AFL. Captain of the Suns in 2017 and 2018 before being traded to Melbourne at the end of 2018 in a deal that saw Jesse Hogan join Fremantle. May battled a hamstring injury in his first pre-season with Melbourne, was suspended in the last pre-season game, then injured his groin on debut in Round 2. Returned in Round 12 and suffered two further hamstring injuries that ended his season after eight games.

His second season at Melbourne was more successful, playing all 17 games of the pandemic shortened year, providing a solid presence in defence in finishing third in the Best and Fairest award. May continued his strong form in 2021, forming the league's best defensive partnership with Jake Lever. Melbourne conceded the least points in the competition, and finished top of the ladder. A hamstring injury in the Preliminary Final almost cost May his place in the Grand Final side, but he was able to play. The injury reoccurred during the second quarter, but he completed the match and became a premiership player.

In June 2022, May was suspended by the club for a week after an altercation with teammate Jake Melksham while recovering from a concussion suffered in Round 11. Despite missing the two games, he repeated as an All Australian for the second consecutive year, playing a key role in his side's backline. May missed All-Australian selection in 2023 but played a key role in his side's third consecutive top four finish.
