Melbourne qualified for the Grand Final with a thumping win over Geelong. They conceded the first goal, before kicking the last five of the opening quarter. The lead was over 40 points late in the second term before two late goals got the Cats back in the contest. Their challenge was wiped out immediately after half time, with a Ben Brown goal in the opening seconds the first of an 8.2 to 0.1 run.

Max Gawn was the star of the third quarter romp, kicking four goals on the way to a career best five for the match. By the last change, Melbourne led by 78 and their spot in the decider was safe. They eased up in the final term, sending stars Oliver, Petracca, Gawn and Lever to the bench, but still added a further five points to the lead.

The margin eclipsed Round 7, 1909 for Melbourne's biggest win over Geelong.

Best were Gawn, Petracca and Viney. Substitute James Jordon replaced Steven May (hamstring) in the third quarter.
