The son of Laurie, who played 57 games with North (and trialled with Melbourne in the 1952 pre-season)), Stephen started his career with the Kangaroos as well and played at centre-half forward in their 1977 premiership team. He represented his state twice, but was sold to the Demons along with Alan Jarrott and Brian Wilson at the end of 1981. He had previously been the subject of a $75,000 bid by Collingwood during 1980.

Icke injured his knee in Round 18, 1985 and required a reconstruction that kept him out of the game in 1986. He returned for two more games in 1987 before retiring.

In 2006 Icke was List Manager with Fremantle before joining Carlton as Football Operations GM in 2007 and remained there through 2011.
