Melbourne's season was over with two games left, and they were lucky not to have been beaten by more than 64 points. Carlton needed percentage in the race for the top four, and spent the afternoon piling pressure on the home side's backline. After kicking 2.11 in the opening term, they found their accuracy and finished with 17.10 for the rest of the game. After being outplayed in the opening term, Melbourne's best period of the game was in the second quarter. They were just nine points down at half time, before an eight goal to nil third quarter made the result safe for Carlton, giving them breathing space over fifth placed Fitzroy. It left Melbourne just a win and percentage above Hawthorn and Essendon at the bottom of the ladder.
Best were Usher, Sambell and Murray.
