Given a remote chance of sliding into the four with their win the previous week, the Demons welcomed St Kilda, already in the thick of finals contention, to the MCG hoping to pull off an upset and extend their season by another week.
Only dual Brownlow Medallist Ian Stewart stood between the Demons and an upset victory. The Saints had taken the lead just before three quarter time with a goal to Allan Davis, and his side continued to dominate for the first fifteen minutes of the last term. They were 19 points in front when Barry Bourke goalled from a free before Hassa Mann missed twice. With a minute left Stan Alves goalled by the Saints managed to lock the ball in at the centre bounce and hold on to win by five points.
Best were Tassie Johnson, Davis and Fowler. Vagg (broken nose) was replaced by G. Osborne at quarter time. Denis Clark was an unused reserve.
