Melbourne win by 5 goals

Goalkickers: Girdlestone 2, McGinis 2, Hogan 1, Roche 1, McClelland 1, Christy 1, McCarthy 1

A third straight victory for the Reds helped Melbourne's revival as they continued their climb up the VFA ladder, and at one point it looked like they were going to rack up a massive victory.

At half time Williamstown had not yet scored a goal or registered a behind, and they were seven goals behind, but then the visitors scored four quick goals from five opportunities to cut the margin to three. It was only a short revival, as they never threatened again and Melbourne resumed running away with the game easily.

Best were McGinis, Moysey and Wardill. Girdlestone returned from an injury suffered earlier in the year but hurt his leg again badly and had to retire from the game midway through.

Despite the three wins in a row Melbourne remained only as high as fifth on the ladder, three wins behind top of the table Essendon and one and a half behind second placed Fitzroy.
