Rebounding defender taken as Melbourne's only selection in the 2001 Rookie Draft. He developed at Casey Demons during 2022, playing in their premiership side, and retained his spot on the rookie list into 2023, debuting in the opening round. Expected to drop out of the side when Christian Salem returned, McVee proved one of the revelations of the season, playing every game, receiving a Rising Star nomination, and appearing in both of Melbourne's finals. In April 2023 he signed a contract extension to the end of the 2025 season.
McVee played every game again in 2024, initially as a defender before moving into the midfield at the end of the year. During the year he polled his first Brownlow Medal vote and kicked his first career goal.
