Fresh off giving Greater Western Sydney their first win over the season a week earlier the Demons faced off against the league's second youngest team - and while they put in an improved performance Melbourne still crashed to their sixth consecutive defeat.
Despite being second best for large portions of the game the Demons could have put themselves in a winning position if they'd converted a number of easy chances. Shannon Byrnes was the main offender with 1.5 but a number of other players missed gettable goals.
After storming into the lead midway through the third quarter Melbourne conceded the last three goals of the term, and only two late goals when the game was already lost made the margin look more respectable than it was.
The Demons were defeated, but they held the profilic Gary Ablett Jr thanks to a concerted tagging effort by Jordie McKenzie and good defence from Colin Garland and Mitch Clisby.
Best were McKenzie, N. Jones and Viney.
Aaron Davey replaced Daniel Nicholson at three quarter time.
