A speedy midfielder who dominated A-Grade amateurs for two years before being rookie listed, Nicholson was elevated to the Demons' senior side midway through 2011 and immediately impressed during his nine games.

Despite remaining on the rookie list for his second season Nicholson was promoted to the senior list as a replacement for injured ruckman Max Gawn, but suffered a club imposed one week suspension after the Round 1, 2012 for drinking while in the team's rehab group.

He was soon welcomed back into the senior team, returning to the senior side in Round 9 and playing 11 impressive games for the year despite missing three weeks with a jaw fracture suffered during the Round 18 loss to North Melbourne.

He found himself out of favour in 2014 and only appeared in one match before being delisted at the conclusion of the season.

Nicholson joined Hampden League club Port Fairy as a playing assistant coach for 2015. In the Victorian off-season he played for NTFL side Waratahs.
