After halting their momentum with terrible accuracy a week earlier, Melbourne nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season against the premiership favourites, and top of the ladder Collingwood.

With Ed Langdon used in an unfamiliar role as a tagger on the dangerous Nick Daicos, Melbourne got to quarter time level, before three goals on either side of half time gave the Pies an advantage, but Melbourne struck bad to grab the lead midway through the last quarter. They couldn't hold on, falling short by the narrowest of margins.

Best were Gawn, Oliver, and Pickett.

Caleb Windsor replaced Xavier Lindsay in the third quarter. Trent Rivers was fined $1000 for umpire contact, and Xavier Lindsay $1000 for tripping.
