King's Birthday Monday saw the Redlegs come a cropper for the first time in 1930 after five victories.

The Seasiders jumped to an early lead, but by half time they'd conceded it. Kicking with the wind in the third quarter they managed just one goal and it looked as if Melbourne would run over the top of them but urged on by a huge home crowd they stormed home to a popular victory.

The St Kilda midfield were the difference on the day but their defence also took credit by holding up well in the face of constant attack. Margitich was the only Redleg forward who fired for four quarters and his goals weren't enough to avoid a first loss of the season.

Johnson, Wittman and Margitich were Melbourne's best. Wyn Murray was reported for elbowing an opponent during the first quarter but found not guilty.
