After 17 consecutive wins, Melbourne finally came unstuck against a rampant Dockers side that kicked 12 goals to one in the second half. Freo wasted early chances, and were as much as 30 points behind in the second quarter. A late goal gave them hope, and without the concussed Steven May, Melbourne's backline was torn open in the second half, which they were unable to kick a goal after midway through the third quarter.
Despite the loss, the Demons remained on top of the ladder. It was the first career loss for Jake Bowey after 17 consecutive victories.
Melbourne played under the indigenous name 'Narrm' for the second week in a row.
Best were Viney, Gawn and Brayshaw. Luke Dunstan replaced the concussed Steven May at quarter time.
