Hawthorn had entered the league in 1925 just a few years after becoming a senior club for the first time, and not surprisingly their debut VFL campaign was a disappointment. Their first clash against Melbourne followed the same template as many of their other matches that year, with the older and wiser Redlegs winning easily.

Despite the small confines of Glenferrie Oval and the wet, muddy conditions Melbourne were rarely troubled. To the delight of a small crowd Hawthorn took a lead into the first break, but by half time they'd conceded the lead and never seriously threatened again.

Corbett, Chadwick, Collins and Streeter were best.
