With a top two spot sewn up, Melbourne travelled to play the wooden spooners at Arden Street with the hope that if they won Geelong would fail against Fitzroy at Brunswick Street and gift them the minor premiership.

With victory almost certain against the struggling Shinboners, the Demons took the match easily. They trailed at quarter time and were only eight points in front at the last change before running away with victory despite playing with 17 men due to the exit of Wally Lock with an injured ankle.

Geelong were behind at half time, and in front by just three points at the last chance but held on to win against the Maroons and leave Melbourne in second place.
