Jackson started his career at Richmond, but suffered a severe head injury in an Under 19s game and couldn't break into the senior side. He came into his own at Melbourne, winning the goalkicking in 1988, including five majors in the winning Preliminary Final. That year he represented the Australian Amateurs in the Bicentennial Carnival interstate tournament, eligible after starting his career in the VAFA.
In 1990 a back injury kept Jackson out of the side until Round 15. He played another 10 games in 1991, but walked out of Melbourne before Round 22, 1991, after not playing in the senior side since Round 14. Traded to Footscray for the Bulldogs' second pick in the 1991 National Draft, Jackson didn't play a senior game at the Bulldogs after first breaking his leg in a pre-season match, then injuring his hamstring.
