Despite a much improved performance from the one they had served up in being murdered by the Roos and John Longmire a week earlier, the Demons fell to another loss in Geelong. The side which had topped the table for most of the year was now only a game inside the five. Meanwhile the win helped the Cats keep their finals hopes alive.
Geelong began brilliantly with three goals in the first ten minutes to Bill Brownless, but Melbourne dragged the margin back to two points by quarter time. Eight changes seemed to be working well when the Demons took a 30 point lead ten minutes into the third quarter, but Malcolm Blight shuffled the decks and eight goals in the next 20 minutes gave them a two goal lead at the last change and they went on to win comfortably.
Best were Jackson, Wilson and Tingay.
