South were the better side in general play, but Melbourne took their chances far better and won with eight less scoring shots. The visitors had their best side of the year in while Melbourne were missing captain Vin Coutie.

Melbourne's amazing accuracy in the first three quarters was only blotted by a poster from the easiest chance of them all. South finally hit the lead in the last quarter after a period of prolonged pressure where they'd also kicked four behinds in a row but the Reds rallied and kicked two goals to take back an eight point lead. South kicked a goal to get back within two points but the bell sounded as the ball was being bounced in the middle of the ground.

Best were Pearce, Harris and Wright.
