The best and fairest player in the Gippsland League as a 19-year-old in 1933, Maurice 'Maurie' Gibb joined Melbourne after being rejected by Carlton. He agreed to sign on the condition that he was given a job as a clerk with the MCC. He would rise to Assistant Secretary before retiring 43 years later, taking five years off to serve in the Second World War.

In his first season, Gibb played seven senior matches, and was recognised as best clubman. In was 1935, his second season where he moved to full forward and kicked nine goals in a game on two occasions - leading the sides goalkicking with 60 for the year.

With the emergence of Ron Baggott, Gibb later moved to the half-forward flank and became renowned for impeccable delivery to the forward line. Struck down by a shoulder injury in 1936, he played just ten games in 1937 after twice dislocating his shoulder. The ongoing shoulder injuries initially led him to retire before the 1938 season, but he returned to training in the second half of the year and played five games.

Another shoulder injury caused him to briefly retire again before the start of the 1939 season. He returned to play six games but was down on confidence and not selected for the Grand Final side. Gibb made the team in 1940 and 1941 for two premiership victories. On a half-forward flank opposite Keith Truscott he was deadly in both seasons.

Gibb retired for good to join the army in 1944 and served in New Guinea with the 1n Ordnance division, but returned to work in his role with the MCC as well as serving on the Football Club committee as Assistant Secretary.

He was also a talented cricketer, winning selection in the Sale-Maffra district team before joining Melbourne.

This article suggests Melbourne signed him in 1933. Also suggested he retired due to a collarbone injury.
