The Reds travelled with only 10 of their first choice players and six other fill-ins.

Ballarat turned back Melbourne's initial attack and scored several behinds in a row before Melbourne got their first. The locals then scored the first goal before Stiffe equalised matters.

After several more behinds Ballarat scored the second goal from a place kick.

No further goals were scored after half-time, and for most of the second half the locals had the better of the play but were unable to score.

Best were Murphy, Rannard and Longden.
