After two wins in a row against league also-rans, the Demons faced up against an Essendon side challenging for the minor premiership and were surprisingly easy winners.
Melbourne were strong at the ball early in the game, pushing Essendon's players off the ball with ease and causing them to fumble and choose bad options when kicking towards goal.
The visitors were terrible in attack, and it wasn't until the last quarter when the sting went out of the game that they racked up a few token goals to put some respectability back into the scoreline.
The win pushed Melbourne into the top four at the expense of Footscray.
Best were Anderson, Smith and Maurie Gibb. Lenne was 19th man. Gibb was also reported for striking but found not guilty.
