Without a win ever against the Hawks at Waverley, Melbourne's task was made even more difficult when Garry Lyon and Allen Jakovich were both lost to injury within a minute of each other late in the second term.
The loss of the two key forwards left the Demons with an impotent forward line, and for all the good work being done in the centre by Steven Stretch, Glenn Lovett and Brett Lovett there was nobody left to reliably convert their efforts.
After a first half where the sides struggled to come to grips with slippery conditions Hawthorn trailed by a goal, and Melbourne got the first of the third quarter before Hawthorn booted 10 goals to six from then to win easily - exposing deficiencies in Melbourne's defence.
Jakovich returned later, barely able to walk due to a hamstring injury, and shepharded a David Schwarz goal through to reduce the margin between the sides to a point but it was a temporary comeback. He exited - giving away two 50m penalties in a row on his way off - and Lyon came on to play the same immobile role but by now the ball was well and truly stuck in the Hawk forward line where Phil Gilbert keeping Jason Dunstall to three goals in his first senior match was one of few highlights for the Demons on the day.
A fighting last quarter cut the margin but Melbourne were giving away too much and lost their first hit-out of season 1993.
Best were Stretch, Viney and B. Lovett
