The erratic former Bulldog and Carlton spearhead joined Melbourne through the pre-season draft after dropping 11kg while training with North Melbourne in the off-season. The Demons had to beat Sydney to his signature, and Cook repaid the faith by kicking six goals in his second game before suffering a season - and ultimately career - ending ankle injury in the first quarter of the next game.

Complications to the injury, and trouble with his quad, cost him eight weeks, and he returned to the VFL later in the season but was unable to break into the senior side again and announced his retirement in July 2000 after suggestions the club was set to sack him.
