First drafted with the second selection of the 1990 National Draft, Cook didn't debut for Carlton until 1994. At the end of 1995 he was traded to the Western Bulldogs, who delisted him at the end of 1999. He lost 11 kilograms while training with North Melbourne in the off-season before Melbourne beat them and Sydney to him in the Pre-Season Draft.

Cook repaid Melbourne's faith with six goals in his second game, before suffering a serious ankle injury in the first quarter the following week. Complications to the injury, and trouble with his quad, cost Cook eight weeks on the sidelines. He returned to the VFL later in the season but was unable to break into the senior side again and retired in July, after speculation the club was set to sack him.
