One of the first indigenous players to make his mark in league football, Jackson initially wanted to join Richmond but Jack Mueller helped lure him to the Demons as a 21-year-old in 1947 instead. He had also been sought by Northcote. After impressing in the seconds was quickly promoted to make his debut early in the season.
Lightning quick, he was named Best First Year Player after 15 games in his rookie season and played in both the 1948 Grand Final and the winning replay.
He missed the first four rounds of 1949 with an ankle injury, but returned to play every match for the season from then on.
Jackson was injured again in Round 6, 1950 and after a hernia operation didn't return until the last round. He played just eight matches in total, his lowest return at league level.
He played for an Aboriginal All-Star team in 1952, and after his original club interviewed him late that year, Jackson moved to in 1953 and played for them instead. The next year he moved to Echuca and won Best and Fairest for the Bendigo League before coaching in Mildura, Alexandra, Thornton and Yea. At Thornton he led to the club to its one and only premiership in 1961.
Jackson's son Steven played Under 19s in 1981 but could not break into the senior side.
