Haw was a burly ruckman sought by Hawthorn that joined Melbourne instead. He missed seven weeks in his first season when he suffered a knee injury in the Round 10 win over South Melbourne but returned to play in the finals. Trained at VFA side Brighton in the 1929 pre-season but returned to Melbourne.

Haw was cleared to Northcote before the 1930 season, and received a permit to play with Richmond in June of the same year but never appeared in a senior game for them. He was back at Northcote in 1931.
