Haw was a burly ruckman sought by Hawthorn that joined Melbourne instead. He missed seven weeks in his first season when he suffered a knee injury in the Round 10 win over South Melbourne but returned to play in the finals. Trained at VFA side Brighton in the 1929 pre-season but returned to Melbourne.
Haw was cleared to Northcote before the 1930 season, telling the permit committee that he didn't believe he was "up to the standard" of the league. He received a permit to play with Richmond in June of the same year but never appeared in a senior game for them. He was back at Northcote in 1931.
