Melbourne welcomed the visitors from "the Pivot" to the MCG, but after an even first quarter they meekly surrendered and were thrashed for their 11th defeat of the year.

They continued their poor form of the rest of the season, and were never in a low quality game where half the players were often scrambling for the ball at the same time. The home side had the advantage of a slight breeze in the first quarter but could only break even on goals, and were behind two scoring shots to six. The total of 2.3 to 8.9 after the first break told the full story, Geelong by no means played brilliantly but couldn't fail to take advantage of their opponent's poor play.

During the second quarter Geelong player Martini was sandwiched in a marking contest, and as he couldn't be revived he was stretchered off. After being injected with strychnine by Melbourne doctor Newman at half time he returned to the field.

Best were Evans, Trahair and Lugton.
