The son of Percy 'Butcher' Ogden who played 161 games for Essendon, Gordon was a back pocket who shared his father's nickname and nearly played as many matches. He failed to impress in his first training run, and only the pedigree of his father earned him a run in a trial game.

He missed the last five games of 1934 after fracturing his lower leg when fallen on by other players in a marking contest at training.

In 1937 he was vice captain of the Victorian side that played in Adelaide.

Ogden was cleared to Warracknabeal as coach in 1938. He had originally agreed to coach Brighton before getting a better offer. He returned to the city as captain-coach of Williamstown in 1939. He was chosen unanimously by their committee despite there being 11 applications, and rewarded the club with a premiership in his first season. He remained in charge until the end of 1941, returned in 1945 to captain/coach then again for two seasons from 1948. The Seagulls won another flag in 1949.

In 1947 he was on the VFL senior umpire list, officiating 14 country matches and acting as an emergency umpire for a single VFL game.

Coached Yarraville from 1951 to 1955, finishing last in his first two seasons before taking the team to a VFA Grand Final in 1953. The club tried to reappoint him again for 1956 but he declined.

Reserves coach from 1963 to 1965 and an assistant to Norm Smith from 1962 until retiring after the 1965 season.

His brother Terry played three games during 1932. Both Gordon and Terry were also professional runners during their career, with Gordon winning the 1936 Nyah Gift race.
