Melbourne finished with a better record than their 1957 or 1959 premiership years, but this time 14-4 was only good enough for third place. It left them playing an elimination Semi Final for the first time since 1954. After beating Carlton comfortably in the last round, they led them by 14 points at the last change but were run down.
Denis Jones was runner-up in the Gardiner Medal for best and fairest player in the Reserves.
The Fourths lost Grand Final to Hawthorn in the Melbourne Boys League 11.10 to 8.8
The club made a profit of £328 for the year. Another end-of-season trip was held to New Zealand.
Melbourne's VFL delegates were Tom Trumble and Richard Taylor. Taylor took a leave of absence from 16 March until his death on 25 May and was replaced by Jim Cardwell. Arthur King then took over as delegate from 22 June.
During the year the club came to the rescue of the Colac club, whose coach John Beckwith had been taken ill. Players including Ron Barassi and Laurie Mithen traveled to take their training sessions.
