Fitzroy win by 9 points
The beaten 1946 grand finalists dropped to 1-2 in the new season after a narrow loss to the Maroons. In contrast to Melbourne's victory over Geelong on the previous Saturday, it was the kicking for goal of the opposition which kept them in the game as Fitzroy missed many easy shots.
Despite the home side's inaccuracy Melbourne looked the better team in the first half, but faded badly in the second as the speedier Fitzroy ran over the top of them. The scores were level at three quarter time and they went on to win. Only the high marking by Cordner and Dullard stopped them winning by a greater margin.
Dockett, Lock and McGrath were best. The Demons suffered a number of injuries, to Stabb (kidney), Lock (ankle) and Dean (broken nose). Scanlan and Jackson were 19th and 20th men, Jackson replaced Stabb in the second quarter when he was injured.
